So you’re building an e-commerce store and you’ve heard about WordPress, but also about Shopify. You will discover the best solution for e-commerce if we solve this puzzle.

Why is WordPress better than Shopify? Shopify offers a similar offer to Wix or Sqaurespace by proposing a list of features for a low monthly fee. WordPress is open source software and allows you to customize your website to save you money in the long run. WordPress can also do more than just e-commerce, making it an ideal tool for those who want a more complete business.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of WordPress and why you might want to choose your next e-commerce project. We will look at the pros and cons of both platforms.

WordPress vs. Shopify Facts and Figures

When someone decides to use Shopify or WordPress for the first time, numbers play a role in the decision. People often choose the most popular things, but is it always the right thing to do?

Well, it turns out I don’t. The market shows us that throughout history there have been many losers who have taken the initiative to do things that people never thought they should do.

WordPress was the king of these cards and charts with a market share of about 30%. I will list the five main platforms below so you can compare them.

But if you look at the big picture and not just at what’s popular now, you start to see cracks in the market that didn’t exist before, and Shopify has really made a name for itself. It is important to note that while this blog and my YouTube channel focus on the content of WordPress, I have referred many customers to Shopify.

Shopify is a niche solution that works very well in certain situations where WordPress just doesn’t work. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There is no option that is suitable for all website problems.

The best way to decide is to compare the two options for you and then compare these options with other options in the market that interest you. In the end one of these two options will win and you have the choice, good or bad.

Before discussing each of these solutions, you should be aware that these are not the only two options. You have a lot of e-commerce opportunities and need to make the decision that best suits your situation.

Advantages of WordPress with E-Commerce

WordPress is now the king of websites with a market share that makes many of its competitors want their own kingdom. But if only because of its popularity, WordPress is not a complete e-commerce solution.

Today we are going to look at the big picture and what to expect if you want to run an e-commerce store. The basis on which we are going to build this company is that someone wants to have an e-commerce shop with the possibility to grow in the future.

So let’s talk about some of the main reasons why WordPress is the right choice if you want to build a future-proof e-commerce store.

1. Flexible WordPress

WordPress is an open source software that is not linked to a paid offer. You can start an e-commerce business with a free shop and never pay a penny, except for the hosting and the domain name.

That’s something you won’t find in Shopify. WordPress allows you to install plugins and themes from any vendor, giving you access to a wide range of options.

Because of the many possibilities at your disposal, you will also notice that you can create your website in any domain. What if your e-commerce shop works well, but you need a membership site, then you can do the same with WordPress. The ability to adapt and evolve from one type of website to another is a strength of WordPress.

Many will say that they set it up as a blog, but then they let the CMS take care of it, that’s true. However, if you look at what WordPress is today, you have a better idea of what to expect in the future. WordPress is one of the most flexible solutions I have ever used, and it has an answer for everything.

The beauty of WordPress is that it has an answer to everything. In most cases there is not one solution, but several for the same problem. Such a large number of options can lead to paralysis of the analysis, but at the same time gives you as much flexibility as possible.

2. Open Source WordPress

WordPress will never cost you a penny because the project itself is open source, which means you don’t pay for the software. This is one of the main reasons why people with little or no budget choose Shopify, which only offers a 14-day free trial.

A business should never be hindered because you don’t have the money to start it, yet we are expected to take out loans and use other methods to set up a business. Things like Lean Start have changed the way people start a business today.

WordPress costs nothing because these people have a small budget when setting up a store or e-commerce shop.

3. WordPress has a huge market for third party solutions

One of the greatest qualities of WordPress, as well as its flexibility, are the third party solutions that make WordPress a very powerful platform. Things like plugins, themes, service providers and even hosting can be specific to WordPress solutions.

Because WordPress is more open, there are more third-party solutions, which means that when you encounter a problem, you have more things that can solve that problem than you realize. A quick search in the WordPress plugin directory, which contains several hundreds of thousands of plugins, can sometimes lead to the right decision.

This open market ecosystem can offer you many options, some free and some paid, that can solve your specific problem without you having to change anything.

The disadvantages of WordPress for E-Commerce

WordPress is no different than any other website creation service on the market. While people are talking about WordPress, a quick Google search will give you more realistic complaints about the platform.

It is therefore more important than comparing two services that we look at the good and the bad before we make a decision. When choosing the right service to solve a problem, we analyze what works and what doesn’t work for your specific situation and problems.

1. WordPress can cost more than.

As mentioned before, WordPress has so many options that they can overwhelm you if you are looking for the right solution. In many cases, you will have to pay for a solution that would otherwise be free on platforms such as Shopify and could be included in your package.

WordPress has no packages, so it can skyrocket for more money than you think. This is why you need to customize your project if you want to be sure you won’t go bankrupt.

2. WordPress has security, maintenance and hacking problems

WordPress, unlike Shopify, is not an ecosystem controlled by someone else, so you can get into trouble. The Shopify ecosystem is like renting a car, it’s not your car, it’s someone else’s car, but you can use it. WordPress is like buying a whole car with credit and monthly payments.

This is what often confuses people, because there are things to worry about with WordPress, such as security, maintenance, and even hacking attempts. Anyone who is not used to WordPress will quickly realize that your website can be a source of problems.

3. WordPress requires less support from third parties

WordPress is not the solution for those who don’t want to get their hands dirty. If you need help, you have to pay for the service or search for the solution on Google. Anyone who prefers to talk to a person on the phone or use a chat will notice the absence of WordPress.

Another disadvantage is that sometimes, if you have no technical knowledge, you have to pay a decent amount to get a solution.  WordPress offers no support other than forums and Google searches, which can be accurate enough to solve your problem.

Some people don’t want to use the forums or Google to solve their problems. Some people prefer to pay someone or a lot of money to solve their problems.

The good news is that WordPress has these services to help you solve your problems, the bad news is that they are often more expensive than other services you can find on Shopify.

Advantages of purchasing via e-commerce

Now that we’ve talked about the benefits of using WordPress, you might think there’s nothing good about Shopify. I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong about that assumption.

I’ve referred customers to Shopify when they needed a solution that fits a specific Shopify model. Some customers want telephone support and other things WordPress doesn’t have. These problems can only be solved by using a platform such as Shopify to solve the problem.

1. Shopify has more support

Shopify has a monthly plan that includes things like support and hosting. If you’re not the most technologically savvy person, WordPress can put you in a tricky situation. Shopify solves this problem by providing support that can solve some of these problems for you.

Just be careful, because although we put it on the list of things they do well, it is not uncommon for the support to be bad. However, we cannot deny that there is always support, and this can be good for some people who need to be more involved than others.

2. Store is specially designed for e-commerce

Unlike WordPress, which was originally a blog platform transformed into a CMS, Shopify has always been an e-commerce platform. E-commerce is Shopify’s core business and that’s where they really excel.

Because of its flexibility, WordPress has become a trap for building yards, but it is a centipede and a master of everything. This is an area where Shopify has benefited from the creation of a platform specifically designed for people who simply want to run an e-commerce business.

If Shopify is more than capable of handling things like blogs and all other types of websites, it doesn’t change the fact that e-commerce is their specialty, and if you look at the numbers, they’re doing well.

Disadvantages of e-commerce

With all of the above reasons, you may think Shopify is infallible, but it’s not. Please note that according to the original statement, no particular service meets all requirements for all others.

Shopify is not quite pink and rainbow, there are some problems with the platform and I would feel bad not to mention them below.

1. Shopify is more expensive than WordPress.

So Shopify offers three different packages, but with the most expensive package you pay $300 per month for their service. This means that if you want all the bells and whistles, you pay at least $300 for maximum service.

That’s when you compare it to WordPress, which may be closer to the price of $12 a month – a big price increase. Some companies will not be able to bear the associated costs.

Plan accordingly, and while there are cheaper options, you’ll find that there are some pretty spectacular jumps from $29 to $79 to $299, which are huge holes. These sites allow you to work on your treadmills, and if you want more or better options, you pay more.

It’s the things that have become more compatible with these ecosystems that get hit first, but know that once they’re there, there’s no way out for you. Another way to look at it, if you are a Shopify customer, is to ask how to migrate your site to something like WordPress.

2. They are limited to the acquisition of an ecosystem

Like I said, Shopify has its own ecosystem that you have to pay for. But that’s not all, plugins or add-ons follow the same problems. Of course there are third party add-ons available, but many of these add-ons are Shopify-specific, which means you’re blocked again.

WordPress works with so many third party websites that are not specific to their ecosystem that it is unbelievable. You can link things like analyses or even other programs. The problem with many of these ecosystems is that they don’t want you to look for solutions outside their ecosystem because then you might find a better solution.

3. The shop is not intended for anything other than e-commerce.

Just like WordPress isn’t specifically designed for e-commerce, Shopify isn’t really designed for anything else. This is one of the biggest drawbacks of the platform. The extra elements they introduced were driven by customer demand.

Shopify is an e-commerce system that works well, but I’m not sure about the other features. From what I’ve read and seen, it doesn’t work as well as a blog, membership site or anything else. He can probably do some of these things, but just because he can do them doesn’t mean they have to be.

How to decide whether to use Shopify or WordPress to complete your project

So you’ve come this far and you’re still wondering which one suits you best. There are three specific questions that come to mind when I try to answer this question.

Do you have a small budget? If this is the case, consider using WordPress.

Do you need support beyond what you can find online? If this is the case, you should use Shopify instead of WordPress.

Are you willing to experiment and make mistakes? Otherwise choose Shopify.

As you can see, it all comes down to choices and questions. I would consider buying more out-of-the-box sites for people with very limited skills, where WordPress is more advanced.


I hope this article has helped you decide which of these platforms is best for you. For me it makes sense to use WordPress instead of Shopify for most projects, but that doesn’t mean it always works. There are times when Shopify is the right solution and you should consider it for your project.
