Calico was launched on Kickstarter and was successfully supported by 2,721 donors who promised $70,634 to bring Calico back to life. Calico didn’t have a fixed release date until the 15th. Surprisingly, it was published in December after being included in the IndieWorld Showcase.

Magic Girls running a coffee shop
The developers describe Calico as a game about magical girls running a cat cafe, and it’s basically all the information you need from the start (or maybe it should be the cat from the start)! Anyway, Calico is a daily community simulator where you get the important task of rebuilding the city’s cat cafe and filling it with cute, cuddly creatures. And in case you did not understand the description of the game: it is a nonviolent game, you will not find any weapons or fights in Calico. Just rest, cats and pink, lots and lots of pink!
First of all, Calico starts with a character creation menu that offers enough opportunities to keep you busy for a while. There are different body shapes and sizes, gender and body neutral avatars. It’s nice to see that they made this game so inclusive. There are also different hairstyles and colors, as well as facial controls to make your character truly unique.

A Relaxed world
Calico is a very casual game. The plot is that your aunt has retired and closed the cafe and you are responsible for its revival. To do this, you have to complete the search for the locals and help them. Basically, the quests will bring and tell the story of the LGBT+ character, and again, it’s fun to see more representation and diversity in Calico.
Since you have a cafe, you can visit …… cooking, well, figure it out, although I have to say it’s the weirdest kitchen in the game I’ve come across in a long time. His character has been reduced to a miniature size, small enough to walk around the kitchen blocks. From there, take ingredients twice the size of your character and throw them into a bowl.

Multiple animals for interaction with
The game focuses on interacting with the animals, because every creature you encounter can be friends, be given a name, be added to the group, and finally get a home in the cafe.
You will find cats, birds, red pandas, sweethearts and many other things to tame. Cats of normal size can be stroked, played with, picked up or even put on their heads like a hat, which I liked very much. You can use magic in the form of different types of drinks on the animals to raise them.

If you use a magic potion on a cat, it becomes a giant cat. The Giant Cat can be climbed like a mountain, allowing you to move through the open world of the game much faster than usual because the walking speed is slow.

Decorate your coffee
Among other things, the game also offers a shop. The shop is run by a cat who lives in a garbage can behind the house and sells furniture that you can display in your cafe. Not all sets are liquid
Unfortunately, Calico has some problems that sometimes distract me from the game itself. The movements of the character are stupid and weird, and the AI is sometimes wobbly. I saw cats flying through the air, a white fox curling up in the air and sleeping. There is a succession of a landscape that becomes quite boring after a while. My character gets stuck in the landscape, and some animal animations behave strangely.
I have had cases where NPCs had to enter a café, but this has led to a huge traffic jam of all NPCs in the aisle of my café. Because of this, most of the time no one enters the café. But I played it all the way, because under the guise of Calico’s flaws it is fascinating in all sorts of strange ways. Starting with the neutral variants, the animals, the strange and superior power of the characters and their ability to balance the animals upside down.

Visual aids and controls
Calico looks great with his hand-drawn graphics in different pastel shades and fits perfectly into the cute and magical world of Calico.
The music is good, it’s quite relaxing and soothing, and some songs are really good, but more music is needed because it gets a bit repetitive. There’s a lyrical version of the main theme, which is a nice song and a nice gesture from the developers.
The controls work, albeit a bit awkward, because the most important button is the B Button, not the A Button. It took me a while to get used to the system because I was constantly pressing button A and there was no way to display the controls.
Completion
Calico is a magical game about witches, cats, cute villagers and a cat cafe, what more could you want! It is undeniable that Calico has some problems with the Switch, but I hope this game will be regularly updated and completed in the future.
If you are looking for a game where you can get lost in a quirky, magical, rose studded world where you can wear cats as hats, then Calico is the game for you.
