A free to play Tekken? Sounds like it has potential, is this finally the great new Tekken game fans have been waiting for?
Not for me, for a free to play I expected some problems but this game is just rushed, 3 game modes which is inexcusable since even the PSP games had more than that, we have here the Arcade mode, Online mode and Versus mode, that’s it. They also have this weird currency system in place: basically you have coins you can use to play arcade mode, coins for online and Versus, also you can have a type of all-round coins you can use to play every game mode, it sounds like a way to get money out of you but these coins replenish in time so while you’re playing one game mode the other might have another coin up and so on, you will eventually run out and have to wait or buy coins though.
As for characters, there are very few and the rest are unlockables you will get by just playing the game.
To me Tekken never really made it past the awesome games that were Tekken 4 and Tekken 5, 6 was good but there was something about 4 and 5 that I never saw captured again and I’ve seen one of my favorite franchises run into the ground. Tekken Revolution also features those new characters that showed up in 6 that I really don’t like, Miguel and Bob were good I liked them but Leo, Lars, Alisa and Lilli… these characters to me felt like they belonged in a Final Fantasy game or something, I didn’t want them in Tekken and keep in mind this is the franchise that stared a genetically enhanced boxing Kangaroo, a bodyguard Panda and a Wild Bear who learned karate with an old dude he found one day, a copycat made of wood, a dude so badass that he felt the only adversary worthy enough would be aliens and he actually went and kicked their asses, demons and devils, a terminator oh and a chef Bruce lee.
The play’s mostly the same, they added critical hits but that’s about it, still glorious Tekken game-play, but even if it’s the same fighting game I hate this new paint job they gave it, it looks more cartoon. The music is… dub step? Seriously dub step and more things that are just… horrible really, some attacks now have this goofy anime speed line motion blur to them, KO replays now show the same move a lot of times with that kung fu type effect which I have to admit is pretty cool sometimes, but it just made it feel kind of wrong for me, it’s still Tekken but just a bit more simplified and with this “modern” coat of paint to it that’s really off putting for fans like me. This game is so easy for Tekken game, easy!! That the hell, this makes arcade mode a joke because there is no difficulty spike, the first guy you fight is the same difficulty as the final boss who is Ogre which made me fangasm a bit, he is totally awesome but its ruined because he is a total pushover, this arcade mode is a joke, I used to break my hands in frustrating trying to beat the game in other Tekken games. Also, the announcer was changed along with some of the voice actors, all changes for the worse I guarantee you.
And somehow I don’t even known how they managed to screw up a few characters, seriously in an intro sequence which is the only time they talk they managed to screw up characters. I didn’t even know that was possible, for example King, my second favorite fighter gets on screen on one of his intros and goes all like: “Let’s make this a fair fight!” Okay… Do I need to remind you that King practices a form of wrestling or UFC where everywhere he goes is dirty bloody fighting? While king is an honorable guy and a good guy in general when it comes to fighting he does what he does best and kicks your ass, he even has a kick to the nuts in the game, okay its more to the stomach but even then his fighting style reflects his martial art pulling moves when opponents aren’t expecting them, I don’t think he would say this, if he can even speak but that’s another issue entirely, so besides the lack of content is there anything good about it?
Yes, actually there is, you can upgrade your favorite fighter by enhancing is endurance his strength and his vigor, this game as an awesome new feature that allows you to practice with a bot before an online match while you wait for the matchmaking to go on , I love that even if the AI is really easy to beat it allows you practice moves or at least not to get bored waiting for the matchmaking which in itself doesn’t take long, but that’s really it; no customization, no additional modes, no cut scenes, no story, no nothing ,you fight just to keep fighting and you may think “Well that’s cool right?” You pick up this free game to play with your friends if they show up and you do a tournament or something, it serves its purpose and hey, it isn’t so bad, here’s the problem though, first of all it’s a very limited roster unless you spend a lot of time getting every character, some of your friends might not play the guy they want and a small roster for a fighting game tends to kill it a lot quicker and don’t forgot the token currency system, if you’re playing with your friends in a tournament and all of a sudden: “oh damn the currency ran out. Well sorry guys you got to wait 30 minutes in between matches or play through the arcade section hoping you get a coin for the versus mode!” It really did kill this game for me.
In an ever growing industry with new fighting games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Injustice and so on pushing the limits of fighting games, this one just can’t compete at all with anything those games have to offer even if I do prefer Tekken gameplay to all those I just listed, I am afraid for the Tekken series, I really think they have potential to a game that beats every fighter ever but for now I think you should try it out, since its free but my personal recommendation?
Get Tekken Dark Resurrection Online, it has a lot more content, all the roster, no limitations on game play, customization and practically everything you could want to make a great Tekken game to play alone online or with friends, so in revolutions’ case I don’t think this revolution deserves its name if you want a bit of Tekken action and you don’t have money to spend, sure pick this game up, why not? But my advice: save up those ten bucks and get Dark Resurrection you’ll be better off.
