I just noticed I never reviewed an animation movie before…that’s weird, anyway Babes, Balls and Muscles, this is Ronal the barbarian!
Now I know what your thinking, this movie is like from 2011 man aren’t you a little late? Well Portugal only got this movie now what do you want me to do man? If I heard about it earlier I would have reviewed it earlier but still for those of you living in Portugal or those of you who are looking for a good animation movie that isn’t Disney or Pixar,This movie is made by Einstien film makers of Journey to Saturn and Terkel in trouble, let’s see if Ronal the barbarian can deliver.
Ronal, barbarian and local pussy (Hey the movie curses like hell so why cant I ?) is hanging around in his village with his tribe the sons of Kron, who is Kron ? Well he’s a dude so bad-ass that he murdered Satan and then stood in the same pose with a lethal injury for 7 days and nights , simply drinking the blood of this man gave humans an unstoppable power and so the first barbarians came to be, Ronal is a member of this brave warrior clan, but has rules of an animation movie dictate your character must be an underdog in some way or another so he is in fact extremely weak and doesn’t fit in at all into his village, he is accompanied by his uncle Ben I mean Gundar, he believes in him and helps him train thought Ronald can barely lift a stone of the ground, Ronal gets guard duty one day and the village is attacked by forces of evil so dark and vile that they use leather gimp outfits and use foot soldiers has cannon balls, that’s…awesome?
Yeah this movie gets across a strange sense of humor, the village is attacked by Lord Volcazar a dude that escapes being totally bland and uninspired due to the help of a great design and good voice actors, he seeks to unleash Satan (okay he is called Zull but I dint want to make that Ghostbusters reference damn it) using the blood of the barbarians and take his power to himself , why ?…Uhm anyway the entire tribe gets captured and uncle Gundar who despite being in a wheelchair kicked all kinds of ass during the fight scene, tells Ronal he needs to go help his tribe and that he should seek the oracle, he is accompanied by Albert a bard who should be played by Jack Black but unfortunately isn’t, he is actually a good character but his voice actor really got on my nerve in the English version, they set off on a quest even if Ronal tries his best to deny the yellow exclamation mark and seeks to avoid quests in any way shape or form, whoever that isn’t possible and he meets up with a shield maiden named Sandra and a elf named Elrick a character who would be homophobicly offensive but he’s an elf so it’s hilarious.
Along their quest they meet amazons and drunken bar brawlers invade an elf tower in a stupidly hilarious sequence of invisibility lotion, and have their show down with the big bad after character development of course, well that’s the jest of the story, but how are the actual characters ? Well the villain Lord Volcazar like I said is evil because evil and that’s it but there’s something strangely cool about him I don’t know if its just the animator in me that loves the way this guy looks and moves but there’s something about a dude in black armor that protects him from any attack, he’s intimidating because he will freaking kill you and he just wont kill you if he has some use of you, simple but it worked for some reason, Ronal himself is a pretty good take on the underdog and on the reluctant hero, he is legitimately a pussy and scared of anything never facing confrontations head on, he was good for a character because he dint just snap into a montage and become a champion he just accepted that he’s the only hope and he might as well do anything he can do instead of trying to go around problems, the shield maiden was my least favorite character, nothing wrong with her but she wasn’t particularly interesting, Elrick was pretty fun and the movie knew when his elf shtick was getting tiring, supporting characters range from good like the old has hell oracle and the sultry Amazon queen, to meh material like the black army commander or whatever he was.
This movie had its own unique feel, no dough about it , from the offbeat adult jokes that no animation movie of this kind tends to do, to the very well done animation and extremely well done lighting system, and even the jokes thought immature and stupid to some people I actually liked most of them especially the sight gags, little things in the background like the 110% alcohol barrel that’s in the bar they go to, little stuff like that timed just right to get a smile on my face at least, it played with your expectations and timed its jokes very well, so even if the spoken humor isn’t your style the physical humor will get a chuckle out of you at least, but there is one thing this movie thinks is hilarious and really isn’t, balls, balls aren’t that funny, the invisibility lotion was funny because it was unexpected and it made a very funny image and it was just ridiculous, but ball really aren’t that funny okay it gets old.
Another thing this movie lacked was a soundtrack, I cant remember if it even had one, come on your got rhapsody to do barbarian rhapsody one of the greatest things i have ever seen or heard worth the ticket alone to hear that song sung by skeletons with long hair and flaming hands, and you don’t put one more metal song in there ? come on, give me a small rift when Kron punches a orc trough the heart, that’s all I’m asking, but seriously even if you don’t want to watch the movie, watch barbarian rhapsody you can see a fan clip on YouTube go hear it, it is freaking amazing, I just wish the movie was all like that.
Overall I found it fun and funny and I laughed at most scenes, but the humor doesn’t work for everyone and an animation movie of this style and look being rated 16 and up, I’m very concerned about its sales especially here in Portugal, ON AIR did a good job dubbing this movie into Portuguese for the most part but I’m not just that just dint turn off even more people from watching it, I think this movie deserves more praise than its getting but most people I’ve seen tend to like it, so if you’re tired of Disney and Pixar like I’m getting recently Ronal the barbarian can be a breath of fresh air to you, and hell you get to see crazy shit like this
