Welcome everyone, “Now You See Me” immediately caught my eye because of two main things, one it had a lot of famous actors in it and good ones at that and two it was an interesting concept, but I still dint know quite what to expect well lets take a closer look.
This movie kicked of pretty damn strong, we start by getting introduced to the various magicians doing their act and its some of the most charismatic and creative character introductions that I’ve seen, giving us a good show while showing who the character is, and its a showcase of the actors as well , Woody Harrelson is always bad ass and he gives a great performance here too, Mark Ruffalo obviously does great I really think he outdid himself here , Isla Fisher and Jesse Eisenberg both did alright to some people Jesse Eisenberg’s performance might get a little annoying because he tries to be very fast in his words and he does do that well but its clear that it’s not a natural thing to him and it stretches his voice, obviously I don’t need to tell you that Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine did great here too right ? Well they did , oh and Dave Franco he was good too.
The four magicians or the four horseman as they were to be called later received special cards that called them to a certain place and there were plans for a big magic show so they team up in hopes to join some mysterious organization called the eye , what I don’t really understand is why call them the four horsemen besides the fact that its cool, they all get cards with respective names and drawings those are Death,Lover, the High priestess and the hermit, these cards really have nothing to do with their personalities and they are not the four horsemen the only one in there that is a horsemen is death, the other horsemen are famine war and conquest (or pestilence in some cases).
But anyways back to the plot, cut to one year in the future and they are robing a bank to a sold out audience in Vegas you’ve probably seen this in a trailer, after a while of the movie going on you might start to notice a few problems , first why are they doing all these robberies ? Well supposedly to join the eye right, whats the eye ? Never explained, they give out some back story referring to ancient Egypt or something about a order of magicians who perfected sleight of hand to steal food from the rich and give to the poor I like that but this hole time it seems like our horsemen don’t have any clear driving motivations and this bothered more than anything else in the movie, more that sometimes pretty fast and jumpy editing even if there were some really good cuts here and there , more than the movies not knowing if it wants to focus on Mark Ruffalo and this Interpol chick or in the horsemen, this really bothered me , I want my heroes to have a clear motivation, the horsemen never seem passionate about helping people by giving them money in all their scenes all they do is talk about how awesome it will be to join the eye and in the end there is no satisfaction given to us in the feeling that something was accomplished , I felt very frustrated after watching this movie and I shouldn’t be.
This movie tried to be structured like a magic show and it did manage to do that, it was unexpected it was surprising and that’s hard to do now a days when we can go to a movie and even predict characters lines, this movie wasn’t that. It wasn’t predictable and in the mystery part of the story surrounding who the fifth horsemen is, it is masterfully done at least I and I think everyone in that theater dint see it coming it played out very well.
Overall I’m sad to say that this movie overshot what it could have been, and i think i know who’s to blame, Louis Leterrier… how many times have I complained about giving big titles to someone who cant direct them, this director has 6 movies under his belt, 6 movies, that would be fine if they’re were good movies , but what he did direct is the transporter series , the clash of the titan remake and the incredible hulk, while some of those aren’t bad per say they definitely do not give you the credit necessary to direct this movie and it shouldn’t have been him, this movie needed a more competent director and it needed a couple re writes to divert time between the characters better.
Has it turns out this movie plays with perfection so many times but in the end it left me more than a bit frustrated but I still think you should see this one even if I cant give it my full recommendation watch a couple more reviews and decide if you want to spent your money on it, or if you’d rather not volunteer for this magic trick.
