Oh hot damn! Ive been waiting for something like this I really have after the painfully average games and movie that I’ve been reviewing and it’s a breath of fresh air to see something like Marvel Heroes, why are you reading this? Go play it now seriously, like right now.
It’s been a long time coming and when I first heard about the news I was a bit skeptic, I thought how are they gonna pull it of ? Well some of the things I thought would be bad did happen but the rest of the game was good enough to make me forget that there are five Hulks and ten Things running around, and how some of these villains like Elektra can put up a fight against some of these heroes, but believe these are just nitpicks there is a lot of good stuff here and I had to pull myself away from playing it just to review it…Where do I begin, well how about the story?
The story revolves around Doctor Doom which again has stolen the cosmic cube aka Tesseract again seriously what is it the 4th time he done this ? You think they’ll learn eventually, and all the heroes go after him pretty simple but more complex since there’s a whole network of supervillains teeing to different artifacts like the Tablet of Life and Time which brings in the Kingpin, Madame Hydra, Elecktra and a whole bunch of people from both common known and underground from the Marvel Universe.
They really went digging to give us a great experience thorough the Marvel Universe interacting with it’s characters and it works great, if there’s anything about Brian Michael Bendis that I do like is that he tends to keep characters in character and that’s rare nowadays and I thank him so much for it, this made the cut scenes a lot more fun to watch, it’s done in a motion comic style and it works for the most part it makes you feel like your reading a good marvel comic , certainly not thought provoking or deeply emotional but it gets you in the marvel mood and there’s not one character that I can complain about both in terms of voice acting which was excellent all around and in terms of writing, it’s a good story for a great game.
The gameplay, well it plays a lot like Diablo some would say but with some differences, as where Diablo is slow and realistic this is fast and physics breaking just like it should be, flying around swinging around or even walking…All of it feels great and appropriate to any character you choose everyone’s move list is unique with a few attacks more similar than others but it’s still character appropriated. I even admire how creative they had to get to be able to come up with abilities and equipment for Hulk and characters like that ,that don’t really wear shirts or swords or anything like that they made some great stuff and got around the matter brilliantly , where DC Universe Online failed by having you playing a sidekick, this game puts you perfectly into the flesh of your favourite hero if you can afford him..But I’ll get into that later, the heroes are all perfectly realized and feel like they should and that is really hard to do in a MMO like this nothing was more satisfying for me than leveling up Thor to comic book levels and destroying mere mortals that dare to stand in my way…Okay moving on.
One thing I really wanted to mention is all the little details they put in the game I mean it just oozzes effort and dedication to this game, whenever Thor passed ororo munroe (Storm) he would always compliment her , I found that really funny because for one it did happen in the comics and it was fun bit of a trivia and a mechanic I haven’t seen used yet although it probably has been, and it wasn’t just Storm, whenever Thor passed anyone he had a bit of history with and he would shout out a reference. All characters did this when Hulk said to Thing “I want a rematch”and man I love that because it rewards your dedication to the comics and even non comic fans will find it funny because that would be a standard character interaction between these two characters, even if you know a bit about them, this game is bound to teach you a thing or two.
And then there was locations from the comics like the boxing GYM where Daredevil dad used to box and tons of other references and trivia’s like that, even the loading screens gave such simple information that they even made fun of themselves once in a while, another thing that was cool was that not all vendors were just S.H.I.E.L.D troopers or holo vendors. Jarvis was around, Ant-man was around to act as a crafter and I loved the crafting system in this game it was really good, all these things made the world feel so much more alive and real there’s even body physics which really add to the game its cool to punch a guy and see him thrown across the room to land on a console pad or something and your powers will pretty much destroy everything even to comedic but still awesome extents sometimes, like this one guy complaining to a member of the Hand that he dint have money to pay them and then you just wreck everything, and I hope he has money for the repairs, oh well I suppose Tony can lend a hand there.
I would talk about the tech tree, but there really isn’t much to talk about here, they were very creative by making enough powers for everyone , even Cyclops and I applaud them for that one because Cyclops only did one thing in the comics and turning that into 3 tech trees that’s damn impressive, I had a lot of fun with every hero I played, just thinking what power to get next what to make stronger and what to sacrifice i loved it.
The crafting system, oh yes the crafting system, its hard to explain what made it so cool but it just worked and it was fast and interesting and it made you exited to find items on the field, getting gear and then upgrading it so it gets bad ass is so satisfying because it adds that extra dimension between comics and game it fills in so well, it works basically by collecting elements and combining them with other things to create more things, simple right? But it works , you can even add stats to costumes, if you can afford them this game can be quite expensive , there are random drops and fortune cards you can use but you gotta have luck like I don’t know to get anything you want from that.
Overall while some people will get tired of the game if they can’t get their favorite hero or if they’re not a fan of marvel I think this game has the potential to attract a lot of people to it and I’m sure as hell I’m going to play it for a while now, so since it’s free it worth’s at least a tryout and I think it’s worth every penny you can throw at it if that means great games like this in the future.
Marvel Heroes has been finally released! After the disappointment that Diablo 3 was , I quickly started searching for another ARPG (Action Role Playing Game) and Marvel Heroes was the one who got my attention due to it’s concept of being alike with Diablo 2 mixed up with my favorite comic book heroes!
Marvel Heroes brought us the old classic feeling of Diablo 2, which is a good thing due to the fact that most Diablo fans including myself think that Diablo 2 was the prime of the franchise. But enough of talking about about Diablo 2 let’s talk about Marvel Heroes. The game is a must for any Marvel fan or any Action ARPG fan. Gazillion Entertainment made sure newcomers and long time ARPG gamers would find a new home in Marvel Heroes and with a reason actually, it combines the most important aspects of Action RPG like variety of classes, variety of levels combined and a huge amount of loot with something entirely fresh in the ARPG genre, the MMO aspect.
There’s a big roster of Heroes to pick… If you’re willing to pay, the game is indeed free to play and but there’s only a certain amount of starting heroes that you can choose from. These starting heroes are not everyone’s favorite but you might have the luck to get a drop of one of your favorites heroes or costumes that you love from a boss.
Marvel Heroes also features a store where you can purchase heroes, costumes and other special items that you can buy. The store is quite expensive if you’re a fan of many heroes, Iron Man and Spider Man are the most expensive heroes at the moment and buying a hero plus a costume might end up to cost more than 30 euros.
This MMO aspect can be a dangerous path to take in the genre that Marvel Heroes is in, but we can say that it went well. Marvel Heroes features world events that brings all the players in the zone to fight against a boss or spawning enemies from a container or a crashed bus. Sometimes the game gets so many players on your screen that even makes you play the game frames by frames (It did actually happen in the first week of launch).
While you’re fighting thorough the zones to get to the objective you meet some random players that are also trying to fight their way to either the same objective that you have or other objectives nearby, you don’t need to be in a group with them like any other MMO to be able to get loot from the enemies, you just have to help defeating them by hitting them to have a chance of getting loot from that enemy. The game features daily missions and PvP as the end game content for those who end the storyline, this PvE daily missions are the ones who grant you the biggest opportunity of hero and costume dropping so you might want to check that out.
Marvel Heroes is running on the Unreal Engine 3, a modified version of the engine to adapt it to the MMO side of the game. I can confirm that this are one of those games that are using Unreal Engine at it’s best without any doubt at all, the game runs perfectly with a decent amount of people on the screen with graphics on the highest alongside V-sync turn on.
One of the things that Marvel Heroes does best it’s being very friendly to people who are running the game on low-end computers, I noticed this due to Felix being able to play close to maximum settings with a low-medium rig without any problems, he’s complains are only that models looking a bit weird and a frame rate drop while using FRAPS.
There’s something that I do complain about the graphics settings that Marvel Heroes has, which is not being able to use advanced graphics settings in the game, you are only able to choose basically between Low,Medium,High,Very High and Ultra. You can turn on and off the V-Sync but it’s not enough for a PC gamer, we’re used to being able to lower the shadows or anti-aliasing for example, this graphic settings reminds me of console ports.
Apart from the graphics, the sound design is stood true to the animated series or other Marvel games like Ultimate alliance, and Marvel fans that never heard sounds of any Marvel Fan will find the sounds they read and imagine in their heads quite the same in the game… Well at least for me.
Marvel Heroes has it’s ups and downs, to be honest one of the major problems of the game it’s not being able to choose an hero that you love right from the start and also not being able to use advanced settings to select what type of graphics you want. Marvel Heroes welcomes a newcomer or a hardcore player of the ARPG genre.
