The game kicks in with a somewhat strange opening, the story starts with an NPC the narrator of the story called “Innocence” explaining how did he got into such a mess that brought him to where he currently is, inside a train with a bunch of strangers.
His destination is a prison, and you won’t believe what it was going to happen to the poor Innocence if it wasn’t for our mysterious main character named Roy appearing to save him from a prison gang that wanted to rape him. After this situation Roy and Innocence decide to escape the prison, but quickly things get out of hand.
The RPG system and mechanics are like any other western RPG, where you pick up a quest and a marker is put on your map and you start making your way there. The game features a morality system that unfortunately does not work, so whether you’re a good guy or a bad guy till the end the morality will always be “Neutral.
The game plot is disappointing ever since the beginning of the game, our main character decides to help Innocence and befriends with him just because he was in trouble and thought that Innonce would do some good to help him escaping the prison without knowing anything about him, the storytelling just lacks right from the beginning, till it almost kills itself around the second chapter where is basically running there and back again for no apparent reason.
In terms of gameplay Mars Wars Logs, doesn’t bring anything new to the RPG formula. You have your typical skill tree where you can improve Roy’s abilities as the game goes on nothing else nothing more. Crafting is also disappointing due to the fact you are able to find the materials to build stuff pretty much everywhere, the crafting is quite simple get X of this Item to make those shoulders pads that you always dreamed of.
MWL is a Third Person game and the combat is boring and repetitive, if you ever try to go to toe against an enemy is suicide so you’ll spend most of your time either blocking every single attack or doing a hit and run tactic to finish your enemies.(you could also roll to dodge the attacks, but rolling 30 or more times in a single combat is insanity).
Mars Wars Logs in terms of technical aspects is lacking and I mean it. The textures are blurry when we get up close to them, the NPC character models are identical to each other, the Field of View is very reduced and certain animations are horrible. The voice acting is horrible there’s no other words to describe it unfortunately, sometimes it reminds us of the countries voice acting translations of the PS2 era.
Mars Wars Logs is a game with the motivation to become something greater in the RPG genre but suffered to become one due to the low budget
