So I finally got the opportunity to watch Man Of Steel, critics are hating it and audiences are loving it, personally it frustrated me.
Now don’t get me wrong this movie did some things right, but some choices just leave me dumbfounded as to why they would even do this, lets start with an issue Ive been wanting to address for a while, Character.
Superman is one of the most iconic superheroes of all time, the embodiment of everything that makes a superhero and on top of that his dedication and his love for people and saving people, this is where I run into a problem with this movie, Superman didn’t care… He didn’t care about human life and I can hear you all shouting now “What the hell do you mean man… Every fight he got into was to save human life”. Yes but riddle me this Batman, why dint Superman fight outside Metropolis, I mean seriously sure it’s cool effects but look at this , Superman has a higher death toll then freaking Zod. I’m serious look, at all the buildings he brought down, if he tried to leave to a desert and Zod didn’t let him I’d give that a pass but he didn’t even try he doesn’t care at all about collateral damage about peoples homes and this was even made clear in a later scene where he destroys a really expensive plane just because the goverment sent it to see where he lived need I even point out why that’s out of character ? And that’s not Superman, also I didn’t like the actor who played him he was just so wrong his expression’s were wrong he didn’t have much acting talent to begin with I just didn’t like him at all, but it’s really that aspect of Superman that I hated about this movie that they just got the character wrong, not to mention something else that happens later on in the movie but I guess, I wont spoil it for you.
The story, I didn’t feel was to bad… I thought the flashbacks were good scenes of character development, thought doing in it flashback form was freaking pointless and they’re were like 6 flashbacks in one movie, this isn’t highlander what the hell are you doing why not do it in a linear format ? It was so annoying when I wanted to see what was going on and a flashback interrupted even if the flashback was good or not, i thought the emotional scenes with Paul Kent were pretty good, one scene in particular really left me conflicted but that’s spoiler territory so I wont say to much about it, just that it could have been done better and much more effectively than it was done here, the rest of the story is very straightforward and i like it well enough.
Zod was really bad ass as were most of the kryptonian’s with them I don’t mind all the destruction because they don’t care at all about humans and every time they show their power it makes the villain all the more intimidating, Zod even felt a bit understandable if you wrap your head around that, he just wants to rebuild his planet , sure he’s trying to dot in in our planet but hell I don’t think we would hesitate to much to destroy mars to build another earth is all him saying, Zod as a bunch of bad ass lines and he just kicks ass as the villain to bad he doesn’t have a decent superhero to fight in this movie.
All the other side characters are pretty good Lois lane is good there’s this army general that really kicks ass and the Kent family are really well done, Russel Crowe leaves a bit to be desired but its kinda of understandable why he acts the way he does in the movie, oh i need to talk about this scene its when superman gets his suit, goddamn this scene pissed me off, so superman finds this one ship that has is father consciousness walking around like a ghost or something, he tells him where he comes from and all that good stuff and gives him the superman suit, okay first I know you explained the superman symbol and I liked that, even the design of the suit can be explained but first, how did you know your future son size ? Because it looks tailor made for him in his current body, and second why did you give him the suit, seriously whats the point of giving him that suit, if it was a battle armor in case he needed to fight we are shown that the kryptonian’s have actual battle armours, if it was to be an ambassador or something we are shown that they also have more formal wear, not to mention the goddamn thing is indestructible, Zod suit gets beat up and torn up but superman’s suit doesn’t even get dirt on him , Superman feels way to invulnerable and while he may appear to be so in the comics he does have weaknesses and a fight with Zod would definitely be hard for him at least Zod could put some scratches on Superman come on, you have these very well coordinated fight scenes where you show that Superman isn’t really that well trained in combat, Zod even points it out and he’s right, honestly there’s no reason why Superman should have won this fight, he dint train or struggle at all to become a match for Zod, and yes superman actually trains in the comics at least he would if he fought a foe with superior combat training, oh and this is such a minor nitpick but how did he shave his beard ? he came out after getting the suit completely shaved, did he just do it Hancock style with his nails or what ?
Okay so you can tell all the problems I have in this movie come back to how the character of Superman was handled, and it really brings the movie down for me, honestly if you want an action movie its got great action in it, but has a Superhero film it was predictable formulaic and on top of that it failed to get Superman’s character right, and that’s inexcusable to me, I’m giving it a 7 but that’s a low 7 I don’t like to rate in percentages because pretty soon we might as well be rating in fractions and equations, it was frustrating at parts and it left me more than a little disapointed and unsatisfied.
