Well with Marvel Heroes coming out on the 4th of June and with Marvel Phase 2 on full throttle ,I feel like It’s appropriate to take a further look at how the Marvel Cinematic “BOOM” started, and obviously the best place to start is right from the beginning
First of all , who is Iron Man ? Tony Stark was your typical rich douche bag that builds weapons and gains money without caring much about the consequences, he’s a drunk, playboy and philanthropist. You’ve heard it, this is true for the comic and the movie, the difference is the comic was a tad more…Well could we say racially insensitive ?
Yeah, not that the movie really does a much better job at not being stereotypical, but at least It’s not offensive not as much when this movie starts out we can really see a couple things one is that Marvel hit a stroke of genius when they chose to have Robert Downey Jr plays Tony Stark, I haven’t seen a casting choice more perfect than this, the situation hits the fan pretty soon after a weapons demonstration and Tony wakes up with an electromagnet in his chest and a terrorist demanding to make some missiles, I think people tend to ignore really the whole evil terrorist thing , this organization is very poorly explained as to why they do what they do supposedly we were gonna see the mandarin that was behind it and so the 3rd movie would provide a bit more closure to the first but sadly that’s not really what happened, so we get this terrorist organization that is more evil because of circumstance and not so much choice, I do think it works to a degree.
It’s in these opening scenes that I was genuinely impressed with the movie, it really felt like iron man was brought to life, seeing the inner workings of the Mark 1 suit and the others that follow just give such a new dimension to the movie if you see how it works it becomes less a piece of armor and more grounded in reality so when it gets hurt we actually see the pieces that get damaged and we know why their important because they were shown being built and working, its very impressive how they managed to get your suspension of disbelief at the right level to where I actually think he could have built that armor in a cave, the ark reactor however does stretch it a bit, even thought it is completely awesome.
Another point when it diverged from the comics was that in the original, the armor was bound to him it was the ark reactor and he couldn’t live without it, in this one he can and yeah having rdj constantly constrained by a suit of metal would have been very harmful to this movie , since his charisma is what makes it so good , hell he practically carried iron man 3 on hes back , this guy can interact with everything around him even with inanimate objects, those scenes with the robot for example, after tony gets out he shuts down the weapons division of stark industries which makes our villain obadiah stane pretty pissed, hes played by “the dude “Jeff bridges another surprisngly good fit for the role, I do like Stane has the villain he atleast has more motivation than just my most hated cliche of all “the evil corporation of evil things that only wants money” or Tecoettowm for short, he his also moved by envy and thats a powerfull emotion to drive a villain on.
From this moment on the movie becomes great scenes with RDJ just building the Iron Man suit and doing a bung of tests on it, its cool that it wasnt just like abracaSCIENCE and boom theres a suit he actually does go trougth a few trial and error sections before getting it rigth and field testing it by kicking some terrorist ass, with moral implications of homicide and severe impact trauma out of the way stane atacks tony paralysing him with a evil sciency device of science which he also used to cheat our terrorist from his paycheck, stane steals the ark reactor while giving his villain speech and leaves Tony to die but obviously RDJ is more invunreable than Jesus and he uses the old ark reactor to keep him alive, thankfully this does limit the suits power and does not serve as deus ex machina.
(for those of you who dont know deus ex machina is when everything is lost and then ligthing strikes from the heavens to kill the bad guy for example)
No no our real deus ex machina really comes when stane goes all beserk and puts on a bigger knock of the iron man suit a prototype he wanted to start selling even thougth he really has no way to replicate the ark reactor, so he puts on the suit instead of using a bodyguard or something so he can hide in the shadows and manipulate the press and the company so he comes out on top like he has been doing no no the most logical thing to do is put on a big suit with machine guns and wreck iromans shit, not sure if he had a plan in case of his victory, its kinda hard to sneak of when your in 2 tons mech suit in the middle of new york. but I digress that final battle was pretty awesome , the dues ex machina im talking about is the big ark reactor thats overloaded and conviently only fries stane when pepper and tony were way closer to it, the ending redems itself with the awesome i am iron man speech.
But overall I dont think you could have asked for a more perfect opening to Marvel Phase 1 . I hope this was somehow intresting to you see you with more Marvel reviews leading up to Marvel Heroes till next time people.
