It’s Christmas!!! Oh wait, not really…
So Iron man 3 was shaping up to be a big movie, and its marketing actually got me pretty hyped for it. I was expecting this one to be the definitive Iron Man movie, the movie that would show us a deeper and darker side of Tony Stark, against a whole new Villain that, in the original comics, used magic. I was really interested on how they would adapt that to the more serious movie universe of Marvel. (Thor had magic and an excuse for it, so they had a way to connect the two)
Turns out, the movie didn’t exactly do what it hinted us with in the trailers, and that was a big disappointment. Let me tell you already that the villain Mandarin from the comics will not make an appearance here.
All this and the super awkward and overly shoved Christmas theme (Which made me literally scream “I get it, this is happening during Christmas” out loud in the room) doesn’t help the overall quality. I’m pretty sure they wanted to release this movie some other time, and now we paid the price with the amount of times they mention and hint the viewer about this.
Iron Man 3 got me entertained for the first half of the film, where we see that the amazing Tony Stark isn’t so invincible after all, that he does care (In his own charismatic way) about someone else other than himself, and that he might have found his match.
It is after half of the movie, that we are presented with a doubtful plot twist, that will ruin the movie to some, if not even most, marvel fans. I do not want to spoil it, but I will tell you that we, as the viewers, will not necessarily get what we got into the movie theater for.
Even after this, the plot continues to take some awkward turns, and the characters end up making some really pointless choices in the end namely just for the visual “show”, which bothered me a lot. I’d have to say, at least the digital effects were pretty fun to watch and hear.
I personally also missed the classic rock themed soundtrack featuring AC/DC from the other movies, which gave iron man its characteristic feel. In this latest film, they drastically changed this to a more orchestral and heroic approach, which completely deviates from the previous ones.
Overall, Iron man 3 is in my opinion a slight disappointment regarding the hype it generated. It suffers from a poorly written second half; dangerous plot twists to the fan base, and an unnecessary change of thematics. If you want to watch explosions and some cool fighting scenes and just eat some popcorn while you’re at it sure, you’ll be entertained, but if you’re into it for a bit more than that, demanding a good story or emotional attachment, or if you’re a die hard fan, maybe you’ll want to skip this one and rent it later.
FRANK FINAL SCORE: 6.8
Iron man 3… when this movie was announced I wasn’t very hyped but pretty soon I got the fever man and no power on earth was going to stop me from watching it, I really wanted to see Iron Man 3 and now that I have seen it still want to see iron man 3.
False advertisement is an horrible way to get movie tickets and to sell movies, Marvel knew that they needed to get something good to get people to see the 3rd movie, they called in Shane Black, they powered up the special effects and they got a badass villain that actually has more motivation than just “Evil man ruler of evil corporation of evil genetic things that only wants money” that is my most hated cliché of all and it makes me sad that marvel did this.
I’m just going to say it, this is the worst movie marvel has ever done, after you give us the Avengers a movie hyped up to the extreme that delivered full on , you turn around after that and give us this, the movie was fine until about half way though, I liked the humor I liked the effects the psychological things (they were actually well done) and I was enjoying it. After the second half, I would like to say it goes downhill but it’s much more of a 90 degree fall straight down, you spat in the faces of your fans , you made a comedy action movie out of the supposedly more psychological and serious of the iron man movies, you ruined, outright ruined one of the best and most iconic villains that marvel has, if the Mandarin was still a racist caricature like he was before , maybe just maybe I could have let this slide.
Honestly Shane black was not a good choice, I feel like he just brought up a template of every movie he’s ever done and threw in iron man stuff, it’s Christmas, the hero is underpowered (which is fine for “kiss kiss bang bang” but this is freaking Tony Stark okay?) there’s a lot of monologue, there is unnecessary and so obvious mystery, you make fun of clichés while you’re doing clichés… just because you say what you’re doing is bad doesn’t mean it automatically makes it good, it feels like a horrible attempt at making your lazy writing good, god damn it Shane what the hell happened.
The armors, okay this movie advertised the armors like crazy, they are all the same… they are all the same they do the exact same thing every single one of them there’s a few I can remember, the silver centurion has a hidden blade, there’s Igor that lifts weights, there’s striker that strikes stuff, and… that’s it, that is freaking it, maybe if you spent less time on stupid comedy you could have gave these awesomely designed armors screen time.
Extremis, iron man 3 has a little thing called Extremis that showed up for a grand total of 1 second in the trailers, no seriously I counted it, in the movie it plays a much bigger role, oh you could say it’s the main bad guy of the god damn movie and the henchman of the Mandarin that takes up all of the action scenes, they make for interesting and awesome special effects but have the personality of dry white bread, the ending, wasbad confusing and sort of cool at the same time
I think I’m mostly angry at two things , one being the promises they didn’t keep and two the wasted potential, there is so much so much they could have done with this movie and they went with a stupid comedy with short but good action scenes and horrible plot twist, I mean you could have went more into Tony Stark’s head like you promised, you could have went to the people who volunteered for Extremis, the Iron Patriot , he didn’t fire a single shot in the movie, the one time Iron Patriot suit is in a battle is when its being controlled by the enemy, questions to the makers have brought nothing but excuses, you destroyed a great villain, and you also destroyed a potentially great movie.
FELIX FINAL SCORE : 4.5
Okay so most of you know this by now, the Mandarin is actually Aldrich Killian and not the badass Ben Kinglsey we saw in the trailers, this annoys me profoundly because it disrespects the character by making fun of him and changing it to a much worse villain with close to no motivations and again like I said the evil guy who runs the evil corporation who only wants money, it nearly made me walk out of the theater, it really did… oh one more thing, why did the manda…aldrich killian give pepper extremis ? why did you do that why did you give her power to kill you ,because thats what happened,it just doesnt make any sense man also marvel said that the extremis could cut trougth ironmans armour like a knife trougth butter because of the melting point of the armor being much lower than the heat generated by extremis, okay marvel you want to argue science ? if the human body was ever that close to 30000 degres celcius nothing could survive that, so you explain one plothole and create another one good job marvel good job,Marvel, if this is how you’re going to start phase 2 I am very scared for what comes next , see you next time when we take a journey to the dark world.
Iron Man 3, one of the most anticipated movies of the year for comic book fans (like me!) was released here in Portugal on April 25th, but did it lived up to the expectations and hype?
Iron Man 3 marketing hyped up the fans and the newcomers to the battle between Iron and the Mandarin. It was said by the movie team that this movie was focused on making Tony without an armor trying to stop the Mandarin and avoiding more terrorist acts in the meanwhile.
The movie is a fusion of the Extremis Comic Books with some elements from other Iron Man volumes, we can see the A.I.M organization in the movie (Not the AIM from the comics AT ALL) It’s the organization behind The Mandarin and the Extremis virus
The first part of the movie was going smooth and great, we saw Tony going fighting against himself and trying to be normal after what happened in the Avengers but without any luck.
Tony is suffering of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), he can’t sleep and when he does he has nightmares it was himself who said this, he spent 6 months to 1 year in his garage making suits, because he is afraid of what’s coming next.
But the main problem isn’t Tony’s PTSD at all, the problem in this movie was the way they treated the characters, characters well known by comic book fans, mainly The Mandarin.
The Mandarin in this movie is FAKE, he’s an actor who is hired by Aldrich Killain (The Main villain in this movie oh and by the way the “real” Mandarin). He is a drug addicted fool, there’s no other way of explaining it. It’s an actor hired by Aldrich Killian to create an image of The Mandarin, the person that everyone looks to him and says “Hey look, it’s the guy behind all this evils things that are happening”.
We discover all of this right after the first part of the movie, when Tony finds his location and focuses on getting to him, once Tony reaches he’s mansion he gets inside and goes upstairs and opens the door, we see Ben Kingsley getting out of the toilet heading in direction to 2 girls half naked in the bed. This is the moment in the movie that everyone who knows the Mandarin stays like “Is this that moment of the humor side of the Mandarin”? Well not really, it’s the moment that we find out that The Mandarin doesn’t exists, and that the marketing of the Iron Man vs The Mandarin is all a lie.
Aldrich Killain is the main villain in this movie, a disappointing character who wears a suit with the only reasons of being a bad boy is money and controlling the world.
