I believe that people went into this movie with an incorrect mindset, one that was going to be another Jason Statham action movie and it’s most definitely not.
We begin our story in Afghanistan where we see our main character, Joey is taking a man thorough a crowd of people while shooting his gun at the air to get the crowd away from him. We know that he became court martialed by whatever he did after that point, what happened is only revealed towards the end of the movie and I did enjoy that they kept that to the end and he didn’t just blur it out at the first chance he got.
In the end its very appropriate for his character as we get to know him as someone who in his core wants to help people but he was trained and built essentially to kill. Every minute he’s in a struggle between the side of him that wants to help people and the side who just naturally ends up hurting someone, I cant stress enough how well this character was accomplished it would have been so easy to screw this up by just making him the good guy, we see him in the future where he is homeless and gets beaten up by some local thugs who also take a friend of his to put her into the prostitution business .
He escapes from them and breaks into a house, finally free of danger he inspects the house around him and this house was basically a godsend place , he discovers that the owner is only coming back until the end of summer and not only that he is also rich and has a bunch of cool looking suits , and the best thing of all he has vodka in the freezer.
Joey sees this has an opportunity a twist of fate if you will and he decides to get back on his feet and just get some form of redemption. He does this very randomly, as he sees no way to atone for his scenes but to help everyone he can, this feeling is reinforced by Agata Buzek she plays a nun and stars along side Statham in this movie. She’s also a great character and another one who could be very easy to screw up but i’ll get into the characters later in this review, he begins working with the local Chinese Triad as driver for them basically doing anything and everything to get money.
Now that he is sober, all his fighting skills from the army returned he can go beat up those thugs from the beginning , it’s a bit of a rough transition when he starts kicking ass out of nowhere but he explains later that he kept himself drunk because he always ends up hurting people when he is sober “I drink to weaken a machine they created” has he would put it, now back on his feet with tons of money from illegal workings it’s up to him to do as much good has he can until the owner of the house returns, he’s not exactly sure of what to do but he knows a couple of things: he wants to make the nuns life better, help homeless people, he wants to find the man who killed his friend from the beginning of the movie and wants to help his wife who he left behind when he became a runaway.
Hummingbird is a very character driven movie as we follow the plot based on his actions, and since he’s lost and confused the movie tends to also be lost and confused about where it wants to go and what issues it wants to address, but it worked for me because the characters were well acted and well written, Jason Statham character is one of the best kind of anti heroes i’ve ever seen, he is constantly conflicted by his post traumatic stress and his current actions with the Triad, but every chance he gets to help someone he does and he always avoids killing people.
He has gotten to a point where he killed enough in his life but he is still rough enough to hurt, his alcoholism is addressed well, his hypocrisy is also addressed well, his regret is a common theme, his love for his daughter that he doesn’t even know all that well and that doesn’t even know him anymore is also beautifully done in my opinion, the nun character played by Agata Buzek is also an interesting character, she wants to help people but as we learn she is far from the traditional saint like nun, she like all people in this movie are flawed people and she interacts with Jason character also very well, afraid of him at first but developing an interesting connection between these two characters after some time, her development and both their development is by far the best part of this movie and I loved every second of it apart from a few issues they could have handled better here and there.
Apart from the characters, there are no really interesting side characters. They aren’t bad by any stretch of the word they do their job well and this movie shares times between characters very well , that being said characters aren’t all that memorable they dint leave much impact expect for a select few here and there, the ex wife for example left an impact on me for the short time we see her we get to feel all her emotions since she lost her husband and her reluctant acceptance when he tries to help her out, and also the killer of Jason’s friend was also given just enough time to make him completely vile a bit one sided yes but well handled if you ask me they briefly touched upon his violence towards women but it was enough to give Jason some motivation to find this guy.
This movie also felt like it was trying to get a lot of emotions out of us and in no other scene is this more evident than when Jason takes up the job that no one wants from the yakuza, i will not spoil the scene for you because it took me by surprise and its the way it should be but it was so well done again showing of that character and the mood the shots i just really loved that scene , most of the shots in this movie are very well put together and the colors especially stand out a lot , every time it needed to set a mood it did it brilliantly if it needed to show Jason drunk and wandering it would blur all the colors and use the hand held camera following Jason as he stumbled thorough the street , if it needed to show a woman it would slow down and clear up the colors , and the pacing of this movie I felt was also very good, it left a few things out I would have liked to see how he ran away from being court marshaled and how he ended up on the streets but considering how the movie went along I cant complain to much.
Jason Statham did a great job in this movie as did most everyone. It’s great to see him vulnerable and human unlike all the cold and bland characters that he’s been playing up until this point actually I think it was what drove people from seeing this movie is that it just looks like another action movie staring the go to movie star for action movies now a day, I’m exited to say that i think it was more than that, it may not be for everyone but it was a satisfying experience and I don’t regret seeing it, just make sure you know what your going into before you walk in, this movie did get a lot of 6/10 and I can understand it if your going for a action movie, but if your really going for the story i think you’ll be satisfied as we were here at Pure|News, I can definitely recommend Hummingbird in my personal opinion, but you still should see if it’s for you because it won’t satisfy everyone.
