This game interested me from the start, because I know that iPad games have potential so a Castlevania style game based on the table top RPG “Anima: beyond fantasy”, seems to have all it needs to be a great title.
However telling you if it is or if it isn’t will be a bit more complicated than what I thought,
We play a woman who falls down to a hidden city filled with demons, she doesn’t have much of a personality, and her character design is… well just look at it.
Yeah, I don’t need to say anything about that, as we progress through the game you’ll find out a few things, one the graphics are unimpressive to say the least ,the controls are slippery as hell, and the game is hard, unfairly hard, difficulty is fine on a game as long as I’m fighting the enemies and the puzzles and not the controls they are to get used to, all enemy attacks have knock back so you can see how annoying that is and with instant death pits you’ll be falling into them faster than you can say “what the fuck is that green smoke”, but when you learn hit and run tactics its fairly easier but it’ll kick your ass more often than sometimes. To its credit it does make you want to keep playing and the combat becomes more fluid if you can master the combos but with the iPad its way harder than it should be.
“Anima: ark of the sinners” is based on a table top RPG game called Anima beyond fantasy, I haven’t played that game so I can’t tell you if it lives up to the name but I can tell you that I would have liked to see more of an emphasis on the RPG features, that could have really brought the game up, If you could customize your character or have loot, you do get abilities to unlock and this is pretty cool and gives you a nice sense of progression, but more features like this would have been nice and it would have kept this game from falling into boredom sometimes.
After a while in the story we find a monolith which is basically a text collectable about the story and you’ll find them every now and then, they’re not really hidden and it tells us that ark city was once a perfect civilization, okay so what you’re telling me is that this was a secret city that was near paradise for everyone who lived in it but it was corrupted and now monsters inhabit it, does that sound familiar or do I need to start singing under the freaking sea? With that said the story isn’t bad there is this really cool character named ID; this creepy jester dude who looks like a villain but isn’t, there is plenty of back-story that you may or may not care about reading, but the plotline is very barebones, just go save your friend and kill demons, it’s pretty dramatic at times but it didn’t really get to me.
One thing I must point out is the sound design, it’s horrendous, I mean it is really bad, the music is pale and uninspired and repetitive, the sound effects are shit and there’s only one for everything so if you hit a zombie you’ll be hearing the same shitty moan over and over and over, you can’t play this game with sound, hell you can’t even stand near someone playing this game with sound, just mute it and get some of your own music because this is horrible sound design.
Overall this isn’t my type of game, at all, but a lot of people like it and I can’t judge a game purely on my own tastes, in the end anima ark of the sinners has decent but frustrating combat mixed with unlocks, upgrades and pretty good platforming sections If you can get past the controls and a lot of game to explore, even if it isn’t a long game, I think you get your money’s worth here if you’re looking for it, but it might disappoint some people as it disappointed me, tighter controls, better sound design and more RPG elements would have made this game a full out recommendation, as it is I can only recommend it to a few.
